A Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after reportedly choosing a one-year prison sentence instead of refunding over ₦272 million from a ₦1.5 billion mistaken credit by First Bank.
The incident, shared on X by @arhermadd, involved Ojo Eghosa Kingsley, who allegedly diverted the funds credited to his First Bank account between June and November 2025.
Following investigations, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned Kingsley before the Edo State High Court on January 19, 2026, on charges of theft and fraud under the state’s Criminal Law.
Court documents revealed that the EFCC recovered ₦802.42 million from Kingsley’s account as well as accounts linked to his mother and sister, while the bank reversed transactions exceeding ₦300 million.
Despite these recoveries, Kingsley reportedly told the court he preferred serving a one-year jail term to refunding the remaining ₦272,252,193.59, a decision that has since ignited intense public debate.
