Tensions flared after Algeria’s 2–0 defeat to Nigeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as players and officials of the Desert Foxes confronted match referee Isaa Sy.
Sy was eventually escorted to the dressing room for his own safety following clashes between Algerian supporters and stadium security.

Algerian officials were also seen remonstrating with the referee on the pitch, and the situation remained volatile in the tunnel, where Sy was reportedly subjected to further verbal harassment.
The protests were believed to be over several decisions taken by the referee during the match.
Nigeria sealed the win with second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, booking the Super Eagles a semi-final showdown with hosts Morocco.
