At least two persons have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a fireworks mishap disrupted a Christmas carnival in Umuchu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The tragedy occurred on Monday, December 29, during the peak of the festivities when a powerful firework, locally referred to as a “knockout,” exploded close to the main stage, triggering panic and a stampede among attendees.
Witnesses said the sudden blast caught revellers off guard, forcing many to flee the area in confusion. One of the victims, identified as Ugochi, was said to have died instantly, while another female victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, including burns and deep cuts, raising fears within the community that the casualty figure could increase. Among the injured was a teenage girl, estimated to be about 14 years old, who reportedly suffered severe injuries to her neck.
Eyewitness accounts described the explosion as extremely loud, likening it to a bomb blast. People closest to the stage were said to have collapsed immediately, while others screamed and ran for safety. Videos shared on social media showed thick smoke at the venue, chaotic scenes, and injured persons being evacuated for medical treatment.

A family member of Ugochi confirmed her death in an audio message shared with journalists, stating that she had returned to Umuchu for the Christmas holidays and was dancing at the carnival when the explosion occurred.
Residents also disclosed that children were among those most affected, with some suffering burns to the face and other parts of the body. They added that the fireworks used at the event were reportedly stored in cartons and capable of multiple explosive discharges, which intensified the impact of the blast.
As of Tuesday morning, no official statement had been issued by community leaders or local authorities regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command had earlier banned the use of knockout bangers and similar explosive devices during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, announced the prohibition during a media briefing in Awka, citing public safety concerns.
“As we enter the festive season, the Command has deployed robust security measures to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a peaceful celebration.
“We urge the public to adhere to the following safety advisories – the use of knockout substances and other social explosives remains prohibited in Anambra,” the CP had said.
