Nigerian comedian and singer Carter Efe has revealed why he avoids attending church, citing distrust of some religious leaders.
In a viral video, he explained that certain pastors build personal relationships with members only to later request money for trivial needs, such as buying cooking oil or fuel.
“Pastors will show love, call you afternoon and evening, then before you know, they ask for money for fuel or even beans,” he said, adding that such experiences make him fear establishing close bonds in church.
His comments sparked reactions online, with social media users both agreeing and criticizing his generalisation.
Some noted that pastors often exploit wealthy members, while others advised separating spiritual guidance from personal friendships in religious settings.
Carter Efe’s candid revelation has reignited conversations about trust, financial expectations, and boundaries in Nigerian churches, highlighting a growing concern among members about the intersection of faith and money.
