Tension erupted at the dedication of the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi, Anambra State, after a Catholic knight, Sir James-Louis Ebube Anaedo, publicly renounced Christianity over the alleged non-recognition of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The dramatic incident occurred shortly after a High Mass led by Cardinal Francis Arinze, when Anaedo began shouting, crying and lamenting Ubah’s name inside the church.
He removed his shoes and walked out barefoot, declaring his exit from the church.
Anaedo accused the Catholic Diocese of deliberately ignoring Ubah’s immense contributions to the cathedral’s construction, claiming the late lawmaker singlehandedly started and funded most of the project before his death.
He expressed deep anger that Ubah was neither honoured nor mentioned during the dedication, despite other contributors being recognised.
The emotional protest has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians divided over his action.
