Brazil forward Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup round-of-16 defeat to Norway, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Selecao.
The 34-year-old leaves as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer, having scored 80 goals in 129 appearances for the national team.
Neymar featured twice at the 2026 World Cup and scored a late penalty in what proved to be his final international match, but the goal was not enough to prevent Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1966.
The veteran forward had repeatedly suggested over the past year that the tournament would mark the end of his international career, with Brazilian media reporting after the defeat that he had decided to retire.
Neymar was seen in tears after the final whistle, closing the curtain on an era that established him as one of Brazil’s most influential footballers.
