Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has voiced strong confidence in Nigeria’s chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
He said the team is focused on claiming the trophy, stressing that participation alone is not enough for a nation with high expectations.
The tournament is set to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Reflecting on last year’s 2–1 loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final, Nwabali said the experience has prepared the squad for a stronger performance this time.
“After the final last year, we have learned so much and I truly believe we can lift the trophy this year,” he said.
His consistent displays during the tournament earned him the role of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper and renewed hope among fans.
The squad selection, expected soon from coach Eric Chelle, will see competition from Udinese’s Maduka Okoye, who returns to challenge for the starting spot.
The Super Eagles, who have won AFCON three times, in 1980, 1994, and 2013 are eager to end a 12-year title drought. N
While some have highlighted mistakes and slow play during recent World Cup qualifiers, Nwabali insists he remains committed to his role as the team heads into crucial African playoff matches next week.
Nwabali believes the lessons from previous campaigns, combined with the squad’s current experience and determination, give Nigeria a strong shot at victory.
“AFCON is one of the biggest stages in world football, and as a proud football nation, we are always aiming to win,” he said.
