Governor Monday Okpebholo has tied his tenure to the political fortunes of President Bola Tinubu, declaring he would step down if the president fails to secure victory in the 2027 general elections.
The Edo State governor made the pledge during a Friday appearance on African Independent Television (AIT), where he framed his administration’s performance as closely aligned with the success of the federal government.
Rather than presenting the remark as mere political rhetoric, Okpebholo positioned it as a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.

He argued that ongoing development efforts in Edo State would translate into electoral support for the president when Nigerians return to the polls in 2027.
The governor pointed to infrastructure and development projects underway in the state, suggesting that tangible improvements would shape voter sentiment.
According to him, Edo residents would “appreciate” Tinubu’s leadership through their votes.
“Edo people have not even thanked Tinubu. How they will thank him is through their votes.
“The various projects across the state are the things that will speak for Tinubu and he will win here. Bet me, if he doesn’t win, I will resign as governor.
“There’s no election here for him. I’m a politician, who under-studied Chief Aneni. My style of politics is not thuggery but grassroots,” he said.
