Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, continued their rebuilding process on a positive note with a 2-1 victory over the Iran national football team in an international friendly on Friday.
The encounter served as another test for head coach Eric Chelle, who is using the series of friendlies to fine-tune his squad despite Nigeria’s absence from the upcoming World Cup.
Nigeria wasted little time asserting control, taking the lead in the 7th minute through Moses Simon after a well-worked move involving Samuel Chukwueze. The Super Eagles extended their advantage early in the second half, with Akor Adams finishing off a setup by Ademola Lookman in the 52nd minute.
Iran responded in the 67th minute when Mehdi Taremi reduced the deficit, but Nigeria held firm to secure the win.
The result offers encouragement for the Super Eagles as they continue to rebuild cohesion and sharpen their attacking options ahead of future competitive fixtures.
Attention now shifts to their next outing against the Jordan national football team on March 31 at the Mardan Stadyumu in Antalya, Turkey. The fixture forms part of a four-nation invitational tournament aimed at providing competitive match experience and aiding squad development.
With no World Cup participation this cycle, the friendlies have taken on added importance for Nigeria, offering a platform to test new combinations and sustain momentum as the team prepares for future international challenges.
