The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man, identified as Alhaji Tanko, for illegally possessing an AK-47 rifle and live ammunition, reigniting debates over personal security and firearm laws in the country.
Tanko, who survived two separate kidnapping incidents, claimed he acquired the weapon for self-protection.
Police confirmed that the suspect obtained the firearm from an individual still at large, and emphasised that Nigerian law strictly prohibits civilian ownership of high-powered weapons.
“I don’t think anybody is allowed in this country to be in possession of prohibited firearms for personal protection. No matter how highly placed or wealthy you are, certain arms are prohibited,” a police spokesperson stated.
Authorities warned that personal circumstances do not justify illegal possession and urged citizens to rely on official security agencies for protection.
The incident highlights the tension between rising insecurity and the strict legal framework governing firearms in Nigeria.
