Nigerian singer Simi has sparked discussions online after speaking candidly about the importance of prioritising mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.
Speaking from her recent experience of welcoming a child with husband Adekunle Gold, Simi questioned why attention often shifts to fathers instead of recognising the physical and emotional sacrifices of mothers.
“Have you risked your life? Have you grown a human being inside you, endured swelling, nausea, and medical complications? Stop asking how’s the daddy,” she said during a livestream, emphasising that childbirth involves irreversible changes and risks for women.
The singer noted that pregnancy often depletes a woman’s nutrients and exposes her to multiple health complications, highlighting the need for care, support, and recognition during and after delivery.
Simi’s comments have reignited debates around parental roles, societal expectations, and the need to centre women’s experiences in discussions about childbirth and parenting.
