Veteran Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has addressed the backlash trailing comments he made about movie promotion, following a public reaction from actress and producer Funke Akindele.
The controversy started after a clip from an industry discussion resurfaced online, where Afolayan spoke about the stress of aggressive film promotion, including constant dancing and online appearances.
His mention of Funke Akindele’s name sparked criticism, with the actress expressing displeasure on her Instagram stories.
Speaking on ARISE News, Afolayan clarified that his remarks were misunderstood and not intended as an attack.
He revealed that Funke later called him directly to confront him over the issue.
According to him, the discussion was centred on cinema profitability and sustainability, and Funke was referenced only as an example of success.
He stressed that he has no issues with her and continues to admire her achievements.
Afolayan added that filmmakers should adopt promotional strategies that suit them individually.
