Actress Juliana Olayode has defended Nigerian clergy members facing criticism over their perceived silence on the country’s worsening security challenges, arguing that spiritual leaders should not be judged solely by their public statements.
In a series of social media posts, Olayode acknowledged that pastors, imams, sheikhs and other influential figures have a responsibility to speak on national issues.
However, she stressed that many religious leaders operate within a spiritual mandate that may not always involve public activism or online commentary.
The actress noted that throughout biblical history, God’s servants often responded to national crises through prayer, intercession and private counsel rather than public declarations.
She cautioned against equating silence on social media with indifference, insisting that meaningful actions can occur behind the scenes.
While recognising public frustration caused by misconduct among some religious leaders, Olayode maintained that many genuine clerics continue to serve with integrity, sincerity and a strong sense of spiritual responsibility.
