The Nigeria Police have arrested a Port Harcourt-based pastor over an alleged plot to assassinate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The suspect, Dr Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, founder of Life Forte Chapel Church, was picked up by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team following intelligence reports of a suspicious phone conversation linked to the alleged plan.
Security sources said the monitored call, which reportedly involved a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, raised serious national security concerns and prompted immediate action.
Investigators allege that the discussion centred on recruiting foreign nationals and sourcing funds to carry out the attack.
Confirming the arrest, Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspect is currently in custody and under investigation.
The development comes amid heightened political tension between Wike and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as security agencies intensify efforts to track other persons connected to the case.
