Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has described marriage as “overrated,” while clarifying that she is not opposed to remarrying if it happens naturally.
The 42-year-old actress shared her views during a recent interview on a Lagos-based radio station, where she explained that personal experiences have shaped her outlook on relationships.
According to Jegede, she is not actively searching for marriage but has learnt not to rule out the possibility entirely.
She observed that many couples who date for long periods often struggle shortly after marriage, sometimes separating within a few years.
In her view, the pressure and expectations that come with the marital label can introduce intolerance and strain that were not present before.
Jegede suggested that love, companionship and understanding matter more than formalising a relationship.
She added that cohabitation can sometimes provide emotional stability without the societal pressures often associated with marriage.
Despite her criticism of the institution, she emphasised that she remains open-minded and avoids making absolute decisions about her personal life.
