The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has cautioned residents against the sale and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other unapproved explosives as the festive season draws closer.
The warning follows growing concern about the increasing circulation of pyrotechnic devices across Abuja in recent weeks.
Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said the command is particularly worried about the safety risks and public disturbances associated with these items.
She noted that firecrackers often trigger panic, cause injuries, and can escalate into avoidable fire outbreaks, especially in densely populated areas.
“Firecrackers pose serious hazards, from burns to property damage and unnecessary panic,” Adeh stated. “They also give cover for criminal elements to disguise unlawful activities. Residents must comply with this advisory.”
The command has directed its operatives to enforce the restriction strictly, with violators to be arrested and prosecuted. Residents have also been urged to report any individuals involved in the sale or use of prohibited explosives.
Similar restrictions have already been announced in Imo and Plateau states, where police authorities say the ban will help minimise disturbances and prevent accidents during the Christmas and New Year period. The warnings come as security agencies move to ensure a safer end-of-year celebration across the country.
