Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed as false claims circulating on social media that he endorsed a specific region to produce Nigeria’s president in 2027.
Viral reports also suggested that El-Rufai might back Labour Party candidate Peter Obi over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement on his official X handle, El-Rufai clarified that he never made such remarks in speeches, interviews, or on his verified social media platforms.
He emphasised that sharing opinion articles by other authors does not imply his personal endorsement.
He described the circulating reports as “untrue” and warned that deliberate misattribution of statements contributes to fake news and irresponsible politicking.
El-Rufai urged media professionals and the public to verify information before publishing or sharing, stressing that failure to do so harms society.
He reiterated that only statements explicitly expressed by him through reputable media channels or verified platforms should be considered his views.
The former governor called on all stakeholders to act responsibly to curb the spread of false information and maintain accountability in public discourse.
