FG explains delay in February salaries

The Federal Government has attributed the delay in the payment of February 2026 salaries for workers in the Federal Ministry of Steel Development and four other agencies to shortfalls in their personnel cost allocations.

The explanation was given by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) following complaints from civil servants in some ministries and agencies who said they had yet to receive their February wages.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the OAGF spokesperson, Bawa Mokwa, the government said the issue affected only a limited number of organisations and was linked to gaps in the funds allocated for staff salaries.

According to the statement, the ministries and agencies impacted include the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the National Rural Electrification Agency, Kamuku National Park, and the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria.

To address the situation, the Accountant-General’s office said the affected institutions had been directed to work with the appropriate government unit responsible for cash management.

“The Office of the Accountant-General has communicated the affected MDAs to liaise with the Cash Management Office of the Federal Ministry of Finance to resolve the issue of the salary shortfalls”, the statement reads.

The OAGF emphasised that the delay was limited to the agencies experiencing the budgetary gap and that salaries for other federal government workers had already been processed and paid.

The office also addressed separate concerns raised by civil servants whose salary accounts are with Standard Chartered Bank. It explained that although their salaries had been paid into the bank, the workers could not access the funds because of the bank’s requirement for a minimum opening balance.

“However, the salaries of the affected workers had been paid to the bank. “The Office assured all affected workers that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues promptly”, OAGF added.

The government said steps are being taken to resolve both issues and ensure the affected workers receive their salaries without further delay.
