Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed that its presidential candidate Peter Obi and vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso are exempted from the party’s anti-defection oath introduced to prevent elected officials from leaving after elections.

The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, disclosed this on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he defended the policy amid criticisms that it contravenes constitutional provisions.

He explained that the requirement for members to sign an oath of loyalty is rooted in the party’s constitution and is aimed at protecting the NDC from recurring defections that have destabilised political parties in Nigeria in recent years.

According to him, the measure ensures discipline and commitment among elected officials once mandates are secured.

Enekweizu further stressed that party membership is governed by internal rules and decisions of its duly constituted authorities.

The clarification has sparked political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections as parties intensify preparations for campaigns and internal restructuring across the country.
