President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said worsening insecurity in Mali, Burkina Faso and the Niger Republic is intensifying Nigeria’s security challenges, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to establishing state police and expanding forest guard operations.
Speaking while receiving the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu said the proposed state police structure would include safeguards against abuse while giving traditional rulers active roles in community security.
He added that the Nigerian Army was being expanded from eight to 12 divisions to improve response to terrorism and banditry.
The President also reiterated that his government would never negotiate with kidnappers or pay ransom, citing the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State despite criminals demanding money and the release of detained gang members.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and support security agencies, while encouraging state governments to invest increased federal allocations in infrastructure that strengthens security and economic development.
