Afrobeat icon and cultural revolutionary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has received one of the Recording Academy’s highest honours, as he was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Los Angeles.
The recognition was presented on January 31, 2026, marking a landmark moment for African music on the global stage. Fela’s children were present to accept the award on his behalf, underscoring the enduring influence of his work decades after his passing.
The Recording Academy cited Fela’s transformative impact on global music, crediting him with forging Afrobeat by blending West African highlife rhythms with elements of American jazz and funk. That distinctive sound has since shaped generations of musicians across continents and genres.
Representing the Kuti family at the ceremony were Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa and Femi Kuti. Speaking during the acceptance, Yeni reflected on the significance of the honour and acknowledged family members who were absent.

Yeni said, “‘I’m sure my father is smiling down on us. I want to acknowledge my siblings who couldn’t be here tonight, Motunrayo and Seun, and my nephew who is carrying Afrobeat to another level, Made.”
Femi Kuti also took the stage to broaden the tribute beyond his family, thanking those who have helped sustain and spread Afrobeat worldwide.
Femi added, “I would like to thank all the people carrying Afrobeat that are in this place tonight. DJs, the press, our label Partisan, our lawyers, fans all over the world. Thank you for bringing our father here, it’s so important for Africa. It’s so important for world peace and struggle”.
With the Lifetime Achievement Award, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti now joins an elite group of music legends previously honoured by the Recording Academy, including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon, further cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in music history.
