The Federal Government has approved sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), extending the orientation camp programme from three weeks to six weeks while scrapping military drills, parade activities and the traditional Passing Out Parade.
Under the new reforms, the Passing Out Parade at the end of the one-year national service will be replaced with a graduation ceremony as part of efforts to reposition the scheme.
The government said the overhaul is aimed at making the NYSC more skills-driven and better prepared to equip corps members for employment and entrepreneurship.
It also approved the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform to promote professionalism and give the scheme a renewed identity.
According to the government, the reforms are part of a broader plan to modernise the NYSC and align it with Nigeria’s economic priorities and youth development objectives, signalling a major shift in how the national service programme will operate.
