What New York Told Us About Fall 2025

By Favour Osah

New York Fashion Week, held from February 6 to 11, 2025, gave a clear message: this season is about dressing with personality. Designers redefined familiar shapes, textures, and colours, creating looks that feel both strong and effortless. Here are the standout fall trends straight from the New York runways; and how to make them work for you.

  1. Statement Coats

Coats were the main event this season. Structured trenches, oversized shearling, and glossy vegan leather dominated the shows. These coats weren’t created to blend in, they were THE outfit. A well-cut coat in a rich tone like oxblood or caramel instantly adds power to a simple look. Wear it over a fitted knit and straight trousers or leave it open to show off layers underneath.

  1. Statement Boots

Fall 2025 boots came with real character. Designers went for slouchy silhouettes, equestrian pull-ons, and moto-inspired hardware. These shoes added edge to polished outfits and grounded more voluminous looks. A good pair of boots will take you from work to weekend, sturdy, stylish, and built to last. Pair equestrian boots with a midi dress or tuck your jeans into a slouchy knee-high style.

  1. Volume Below

Runways leaned heavily toward wide and barrel-leg trousers, balancing them with slim or cropped tops. The focus was on movement, fabrics that flowed instead of clung. High-waist styles kept the silhouette refined while cropped hems helped show off footwear. It’s a clean way to play with proportion and comfort at once.

  1. Purple and Saturated Colors

Fall usually means neutrals, but this time designers went bold. Deep purples, amethysts, and jewel tones replaced beige and black. Many shows used a single hue head to toe, a purple trench with matching boots, for example, to create a statement look without chaos. If you’re color shy, start with one piece, like a plum bag or scarf.

  1. Plaid, Brooches, and Preppy Twists

Classic prints got a subversive update. Plaid appeared in unexpected ways, layered with sequins, trimmed with leather, or paired with oversized brooches. The mood was playful rather than prim. You can bring this home with one standout plaid piece, like a skirt or jacket, and finish it with a quirky brooch or bold shoe. It’s preppy without feeling dated.

  1. Daytime Sparkle

Sequins stepped out of nightlife and onto the streets this season. Several New York designers used them on blouses, pencil skirts, and handbags, styled with heavier fabrics to tone them down. The result looked clean, not flashy. A sequin top under a wool coat or blazer worked as an everyday piece instead of party wear. It showed how the line between casual and dressy is getting thinner for Fall 2025.

  1. Bold Accessories

The season’s accessories were bold and confident. Oversized totes, structured handbags, retro hats, and chunky jewelry all made appearances on and off the runway. These details finished the looks, sometimes transforming plain outfits into memorable ones. A deep burgundy tote or a sculptural earring set can shift your entire look with minimal effort.

This fall focuses on simplicity and intention. You don’t need to follow every trend, just choose a few that fit your style. The real difference always comes from how you wear them.
