Social media critic Verydarkman has criticised Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, taking aim at the singer’s claim of being the “new Fela.”
Verydarkman accused Wizkid of lacking originality, alleging that his early career relied heavily on sampling other artists’ music, specifically citing Wizkid’s hit track “Holla at Your Boy,” which he claimed was based on a 2009 song.
He argued that comparing Wizkid to Fela Anikulapo-Kuti or even Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti, is misplaced.
According to Verydarkman, Fela’s music was rooted in activism, creativity, and live performance, qualities he says Wizkid does not fully embody.
He also criticised Wizkid’s stage presence, suggesting that his performances depend more on backing tracks than live delivery.
Verydarkman insisted that while Wizkid has achieved global fame, he cannot be measured against the originality and artistry of Fela or his family, sparking heated online debates about the evolution of Afrobeats and creative authenticity in modern Nigerian music.
