Lere Olayinka, aide to Nyesom Wike, has, in a series of tweets, tackled Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, over assets in the United States allegedly belonging to a rights activist.

In a tweet on his verified X handle, Olayinka accused Sowore of lying on oath, an offence that carries 14 14-year prison sentence.

Lere Olayinka revealed that ahead of the 2023 general elections, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress Party, Omeyele Sowore, allegedly lied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), that he owned a N5m house and a Toyota Camry.

He tweeted, “In a buildup to the 2023 general elections, Daily Trust reported Sowore’s asset declaration to INEC in which he stated ownership of a SINGLE PROPERTY valued at ₦5 million and a 2008 Toyota Camry.”

“But at that time, Sowore owned a property in the US, which he bought at $552,000 (about N850m now).

“He did not declare this property, thereby lying on oath in his Code of Conduct asset declaration, and this is a criminal offence.

Violations of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act attract severe penalties, such as asset forfeiture and a 10-year ban from holding public office.

Lere noted that “Lying on oath is also a criminal offence, which attracts 14 years of imprisonment.”

“Under the Criminal Code, Section 118 reads: “Any person convicted of perjury is liable to imprisonment for up to fourteen years.”

Recall that Omoyele Sowore had accused Nyesom Wike, principal to Lere Olayinka, of money laundering to the United States to purchase a property in Florida, and he has since petitioned the Florida State Attorney General seeking seizure of the FCT Minister’s property.
