A Nigerian woman has sparked debate online after criticising what she called excessive and unfamiliar family demands ahead of her wedding.
Speaking on social media, she expressed frustration that her fiancé is expected to meet the financial expectations of relatives she barely knows.
“If you see this list, guys it will shock you… I have not received 5 naira from them. I don’t even know them,” she said.
She revealed that her relatives insisted the couple must “settle” umunna and umuada before the marriage could proceed, a tradition she believes is unfair and outdated.
The woman questioned why her wedding should be delayed or threatened simply because her fiancé cannot satisfy extended family demands.
Social media users weighed in, with some agreeing the bride price has become a tool for extortion, while others defended cultural practices.
The story has reignited conversations on the balance between tradition and fairness in modern Nigerian marriages.
