The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed a landmark bill imposing life imprisonment on anyone found guilty of sexual abuse involving minors.
Under the new legislation, any man or woman who engages in sexual intercourse with a child will face life imprisonment without the option of fines.
The move marks one of the toughest legal stances against pedophilia in the country.
The bill, debated extensively during a live plenary session broadcast on NASS TV, was initially sponsored by Senator Adamu Aleiro, who called for stricter penalties to address the severe and lasting impact of sexual abuse on children.

“Defilement of a minor should carry a greater punishment,” Senator Aleiro said, noting the irreversible harm inflicted on young victims. While he proposed a minimum of 20 years imprisonment, Senator Adeleke argued for life imprisonment, citing international precedents and the gravity of the offense.
Following a heated debate and procedural clarifications by the Senate President, the motion for life imprisonment was put to a vote, with “ayes” decisively outweighing “nays,” resulting in the bill’s passage.
The legislation applies equally to male and female perpetrators, ensuring uniform punishment regardless of gender.
