Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from office in compliance with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to resign.
The development was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Tuggar’s resignation follows an order by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directing all appointees with political ambitions to vacate their positions on or before March 31.

The directive, according to the presidency, is anchored on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former minister’s exit comes amid growing speculation about his intention to contest the Bauchi State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and policymaker, was appointed into the Federal Executive Council in August 2023 and has since played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
