Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, has declared January 23 as a “Day of Betrayal” following the decision of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to leave the party.
The declaration came after the governor formally resigned from the NNPP on Friday, ahead of his expected defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to his supporters in Kano, Kwankwaso said the date should be marked in history as a symbol of political betrayal and broken trust.
He said, “Today, as the leader of this Movement, I declare the 23rd of January as Betrayal Day.
“We believe that day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”
Kwankwaso also revealed that he had earlier appealed to the governor to reconsider his decision and remain in the opposition party, warning that the electoral mandate secured under the NNPP should not be transferred to rival political forces.
