The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress Cecilia Obi-Kechere, widely known as Oby Kechere.

Her passing was announced by the Directors Guild of Nigeria, which disclosed that she died on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement, the guild expressed deep sorrow, highlighting her contributions to the growth of Nollywood and her active involvement in the Abuja chapter. Colleagues described her as dedicated and influential within the industry.

The guild extended condolences to her family, friends and associates, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.

Her death comes days after the reported passing of another Nollywood figure, underscoring a period of grief for the industry.

Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and practitioners, celebrating her legacy and impact on Nigerian cinema.
