The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has suspended its planned indefinite strike after the Federal Government of Nigeria reversed its earlier decision on the Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
The development follows high-level engagements with key officials, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.
According to NARD, the reinstated allowance structure is expected to reflect in doctors’ April salaries and subsequent payments. The association also confirmed that steps are underway to clear outstanding arrears, including nineteen months of unpaid allowances.
In addition, the government has pledged to begin disbursement of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, aimed at improving welfare and training conditions for resident doctors nationwide.
While the strike has been suspended for now, NARD emphasized that it will continue to monitor the government’s commitments, with a comprehensive review scheduled for its next meeting in May to assess compliance.
