The United States has suspended immigrant visa processing for Nigerians, deepening travel restrictions and raising fresh concerns for prospective migrants.
The directive, issued by the US State Department, affects applicants from 75 countries, including Nigeria, Russia, Somalia, Brazil and Afghanistan.
As a result, Nigerians will temporarily be unable to submit or process immigrant visa applications.
According to a State Department spokesperson, the suspension is aimed at preventing the entry of individuals likely to become “public charges” and depend on welfare benefits.
The policy is scheduled to take effect on January 21.The move follows a recent decision requiring Nigerian B1 and B2 visa applicants to post bonds of up to $15,000, as well as earlier restrictions on green card holders and student visas.
Officials cited visa overstays and security concerns as reasons for the tightening measures.
