The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a regional State of Emergency amid growing security concerns.
The declaration came during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja on Tuesday, December 9.
The meeting was convened in response to recent coups and attempted mutinies across the sub-region.
Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, highlighted that the recent upheavals underscore “the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
The decision signals a more coordinated approach to tackling instability, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to peace and democratic governance in West Africa.
Security experts suggest that the declaration will prompt member states to intensify intelligence-sharing and joint military operations to curb threats from militant groups and prevent further political disruptions.
The move comes as citizens and regional leaders call for urgent measures to safeguard democracy and regional stability.
