The African Democratic Congress has recorded a surge in political momentum following the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with at least eight federal lawmakers reportedly set to join the party.

Obi formally joined the ADC in Enugu, urging Nigerians and opposition forces to unite under a broad coalition to address what he described as Nigeria’s worsening poverty, disunity and democratic decline.

Explaining his move, Obi said his decision was driven by patriotism and national interest, calling on members of the Obidient Movement and other opposition leaders to rally around the ADC.

He disclosed that several serving senators and members of the House of Representatives attended his defection ceremony, signalling their readiness to switch parties.

ADC officials confirmed that Obi’s entry has boosted the party’s appeal ahead of the 2027 elections, with more lawmakers and political heavyweights expected to defect in the coming weeks.

Party leaders believe the growing coalition positions the ADC as a strong challenger to the ruling APC.
