Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) School of Nursing staged a protest on Monday over a sudden increase in school fees from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 per academic session.
The hike, described by students as “outrageous” and unsustainable, has sparked outrage, especially among those from low-income families.
Institutional Upgrade CitedIn a memo dated 23rd January 2026, Prof. O. I. Ejiofor, CMAC and Chairman of the NAUTH Board of Nursing, said the increase is part of plans to upgrade the institution into a reputable monotechnic.
The new fees affect all levels, including HND, Basic Nursing, and Midwifery, and were implemented immediately.
Calls for Federal InterventionCritics argue that such steep increases risk limiting access to quality education and have urged the federal government to intervene through funding or scholarships.
Observers warn that without support, some students may be forced to drop out.
