The United States Embassy (US Embassy) in Abuja and the United States Consulate General in Lagos will suspend operations on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day, the U.S. Mission Nigeria has announced.
In a notice shared via its official X account, the mission stated: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.”
Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It was first created to mark the birthday of George Washington, the country’s first president, but has since expanded into a broader commemoration of all American presidents and their impact on the nation.
Explaining the evolution of the holiday, the mission noted: “Originally established to honour George Washington’s birthday, Presidents’ Day now celebrates all U.S. presidents and their leadership in shaping the nation’s history and positively influencing the world.”
The post also highlighted a historical detail linked to Washington’s military legacy: “#DYK? George Washington created the first ‘Badge of Military Merit,’ which later became the Purple Heart, and the medal still bears his image today.”
The Purple Heart remains one of the most recognised U.S. military decorations, awarded to service members wounded or killed in action.
Regular diplomatic and consular services at both missions are expected to resume on Tuesday, February 17, following the one-day closure.
