The University of Lagos was thrown into mourning on Thursday, 18th of September after reports emerged that the recently-elected president of the Faculty og Education, Balogun Damilola Raphael, had drowned during a beach hangout at Eleko Beach with friends after the recently concluded exams.

The incident raised concern among students about safety, especially among friends during off-campus activities. The friends who were left with him when he went missing were allegedly questioned concerning the incident when the body was initially not found. However, the body of Damilola was reportedly found later on at Museyo in Ibeju-Lekki, approximately 2km from where he entered the water and he was declared dead on Saturday, 20th of September, 2025.
The Dean of the Faculty of Education expressed shock, describing the late president as a “vibrant leader dedicated to student welfare”. Fellow students also flooded social media with tributes, and condolences with students of the faculty remembering his affirts im organizing academic and social programs.
The Lagos State Police Command said invsstigations were ongoing, while UNILAG management promised to release an official statement later on. However, the school is planning to hold a candlelight procession for Damilola on Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025.
