Nigeria’s defensive frailties overshadowed the Super Eagles’ 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday, despite the result sealing qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 in Morocco.
Goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfried Ndidi and Ademola Lookman put Nigeria in a commanding position, but two late Tunisian goals sparked concern over the team’s ability to manage games.
The chaotic closing stages exposed lingering weaknesses at the back and triggered widespread criticism from fans and analysts.
Statistics firm Opta Nigeria highlighted the trend, noting that the Super Eagles have failed to keep a clean sheet in five consecutive matches and have conceded in each of their last four AFCON outings.
Much of the criticism centred on defensive organisation and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, with supporters questioning decision-making, composure and aerial command.
While Nigeria’s attacking display earned praise, many warned that defensive lapses could prove costly as the tournament progresses.
Nigeria will face Uganda in the round of 16 on Tuesday, with renewed focus on tightening up at the back.
