After falling just short of automatic qualification, Nigeria’s Super Eagles now face a grueling path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup through an inter-confederation playoff tournament involving 11 nations.
Despite a 4-0 rout of Benin Republic, featuring a stunning hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a late strike from Frank Onyeka, Nigeria missed the top spot in Group C.
South Africa’s 3-0 win over Rwanda saw them clinch the group with 18 points, while Nigeria finished second on 17 points, edging Benin on goal difference.
But there’s still hope. Nigeria secured a spot in the CAF playoff as one of the best runners-up. The journey begins with a clash against Gabon in Morocco, with the winner set to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in a continental final.

Success there will take the Super Eagles into a high-stakes intercontinental tournament in March 2025, where just two tickets to the World Cup remain.
The 11 teams confirmed for the playoff include footballing heavyweights like: Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, DR Congo, Panama, Costa Rica, Jamaica, New Caledonia, Bolivia, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
With the bitter memory of missing Qatar 2022 still fresh, the pressure is on coach Eric Chelle and his team to deliver.
Fans are hopeful, especially with Osimhen leading the attack, but the road ahead is full of giants — and one misstep could end the dream.
