The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised the alarm over a suspected tampered batch of SMA Gold infant milk circulating in Kaduna, following a reported illness in a four-month-old baby.
Preliminary investigations by the agency revealed potential manipulation of the product’s expiry date, with notable inconsistencies between the original markings and the packaging presented for sale.
NAFDAC warned that such alterations could indicate an attempt to extend the milk’s shelf life, posing serious risks to consumers.

Health officials linked the milk to the infant’s symptoms, highlighting the dangers of using expired or compromised formula, including infections, malnutrition, and other health complications.
In response, NAFDAC has stepped up monitoring across Kaduna and instructed all distributors and retailers to immediately remove any suspicious batches from circulation.
The agency also urged parents and caregivers to carefully check the labels, verify expiry dates, and report any irregularities to the authorities to ensure the safety of infants.
