Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has sparked fresh debate after questioning comparisons between Wizkid and late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Portable’s remarks follow recent online clashes involving Wizkid and Seun Kuti over claims that the Grammy-winning star represents a “new Fela”.
While some fans have embraced the label, Portable rejected it, insisting that Fela’s legacy was rooted in activism, sacrifice and repeated confrontations with state power.
In a viral video, Portable challenged Wizkid’s credentials, asking whether the singer had endured imprisonment or persecution for speaking against authority.
He argued that fame and wealth alone cannot equate to Fela’s historical impact. The Zazuu crooner also used the moment to highlight his own struggles, portraying himself as closer to ordinary Nigerians through lived experience and generosity.
According to him, suffering, not stardom, defines authenticity. The comments have ignited mixed reactions online, fuelling debate over legacy and musical identity.
