Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has nominated Pastor (Hon) Peter Pereotubo Akpe, his Chief of Staff at the Government House, as the state’s new Deputy Governor.
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly approved the nomination on Tuesday, bringing months of speculation over the late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo’s succession to a close.
Akpe, a native of Ebedebiri in Sagbama Local Government Area—the same community as his predecessor—is a seasoned public administrator and politician with decades of experience in governance.
He began his career in the Rivers and Bayelsa state civil services before moving fully into politics.
Akpe served as commissioner under the Seriake Dickson administration from 2008 to 2011, and later represented his constituency in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for two terms (2011–2019), holding the position of Majority Leader throughout his tenure.
An ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Akpe brings a blend of administrative experience, legislative expertise, and moral authority to his new role.
His appointment signals a commitment to continuity in governance and the stabilization of leadership following the untimely death of Ewhrudjakpo on December 11, 2025.
