Obidient Movement Accuses APC of Using Violence, Intimidation to Secure Abuja Municipal Area Council Election Victory

The Obidient Movement has rejected the outcome of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the process and undermining democratic choice.

In a viral video circulated on Monday, the group’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, described the result of the February 21, 2026 council poll as illegitimate.

“The result of the Abuja Municipal Area Council AMAC chairmanship election held this past Saturday, February 21st, 2026, are not just a political setback, they are a brazen assault on the foundation of our democracy,” Tanko said.

According to him, supporters of the movement had thrown their weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, and other party contenders, claiming the campaign drew significant grassroots backing.

“As many of you know, the Obedient Movement and indeed fellow Nigerians threw their full weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dr. Moses Paul and its other candidates. Inspired by the visions of a new Nigeria, with our supporters mobilised with unprecedented passion, creating a powerful coalition for change,” he stated.

The group also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of contributing to low voter turnout through what it termed poor coordination of polling units.

“The Independent Electoral Commission contributed to the voters’ apathy by dividing the polling units without informing the voters, making it difficult for voters to locate their polling unit. Many left in frustration without voting, with 7% turnout,” Tanko alleged.

He further referenced Peter Obi, noting that his call for supporters to participate in the election led to a marginal increase in turnout compared to previous area council polls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“By calling his supporters to come out and vote, this explained the marginal increase of voters compared to previous voting patterns in the FCT local government elections. We were clearly ahead in the polls. The will of the people was undeniable,” he said.

However, Tanko maintained that the final declaration did not reflect the situation at polling units.

“Yet, what we witnessed was a criminal subversion of that will. The declared victory of the All Progressives Congress was not earned at the polling units. It was manufactured through a campaign of violence, intimidation, and blatant manipulation,” he added.

The controversy follows the conclusion of the 2026 FCT Area Council elections, where official results released by INEC showed the APC winning five of the six chairmanship seats — AMAC, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje — while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured Gwagwalada. The ADC did not win any council.

In AMAC, incumbent chairman Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was declared winner with 40,295 votes, defeating his closest rivals, including the ADC candidate, who polled 12,109 votes.
