Prices of some building materials, particularly cement and blocks, have soared, recent findings have shown.

‎A market survey conducted by NAN at various wholesale and retail shops, in Enugu on Friday showed that the prices of the materials have increased when compared to the prices in 2025.

‎A wholesale cement dealer at Building Material Market, Enugu, Mr Daniel Ede, said that the increase in the price started due to the increase in transportation cost nationwide.

Ede noted that a trailer load of Dangote cement with 600 bags initially sold at N4.3 million in 2025 is now about N7 million in the first quarter of 2026.

‎“The prices change on daily basis, so as we are talking now, I cannot guarantee the prices it will be sold tomorrow,” he said.

‎A retailer of cement at Kenyetta Market, Mr Kanayo Ude, said he was surprised at the rate prices of the building materials, particularly cement had increased in the country.

According to him, a bag of Dangote Cement is sold at N11,700, Unicem for N11,500 and BUA Cement for N12,000.

A dealer in Iron rod, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the product had increased from ₦1.03 million to N1.3 million per ton.

Mr Jude Agu, a dealer in sharp sand and granite, said that sand and granite tipper loads had risen sharply due to increase in fuel and other logistics costs.

‎According to Agu, a tipper load of sand  goes for N110,000 as against N80,000 and granite tipper load is sold for N250,000 as against N210,000 in 2025.

‎A block industry owner, Mr Udochukwu Sunday, noted that an increase in the price of the product had affected business as six inch and nine-inch blocks had increased  from N450 to N550 and N600 to N700 respectively.

‎A real estate developer, Mr Cletus Ezeh, said that the total cost to complete a standard 3-bedroom bungalow now ranges from N20 million to N30 million depending on location, quality and finishing.

‎Ezeh lamented that the increased prices of building materials were delaying projects, scaling down developments and worsening Nigeria’s housing deficit.
