Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has nominated Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor and forwarded his name to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mustapha Muhammad.
According to the statement, the nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy in the event of a vacancy.
The position became vacant following the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
His exit was earlier confirmed by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Mohammed.
The statement noted that the decision was taken in the interest of stability and continuity in governance within the state.
Governor Yusuf said the nomination of Garo followed wide consultations with key stakeholders, expressing confidence in his capacity to support the administration’s agenda.
He also urged the Kano State House of Assembly to expedite consideration and approval of the nomination.
Garo, 48, has over two decades of experience in politics and public administration.
He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
He also previously held positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.
