A video of a Nigerian lady criticising the practice of bride price has gone viral, sparking debate online.
In the clip, shared by X user @mazi_chinonso1, she expressed frustration that the tradition, intended to honour marriage, has become a financial barrier for many young couples.
The woman lamented that some men are ready to marry but cannot afford the bride price, while some women are reaching 35 without marrying—not due to a lack of suitors but because of monetary demands.
She questioned the origin of the practice, pointing out that God gave Adam a wife freely, implying marriage should not involve payments.
She further criticised communities that treat marriage as a transaction, listing multiple requirements as if the groom is buying a bride.
Her comments emphasise the need to reconsider outdated customs and allow couples to marry without unnecessary financial burdens.
