Nigerian singer Aituaje Iruobe, popularly known as Waje, has denied ever being romantically involved with veteran rapper M.I Abaga.
She said the rumours started after their 2010 collaboration on the hit song One Naira, which many fans interpreted as reflecting a real-life relationship.
According to Waje, the chemistry displayed in the music video and the romantic theme of the track contributed to public assumptions about their relationship.
The singer emphasized that both she and M.I were portraying characters in the song’s story, and their professional collaboration had nothing to do with their personal lives.
“Because of the rollout and romantic theme of One Naira, a lot of people speculated that we were dating. But we never dated. We were just friends who saw how great a love story could be in a song,”
Waje said.Waje also spoke about her current relationship status, revealing that she is single and not actively seeking a romantic partner.
She said her priority is personal growth and building a stable, meaningful life, rather than investing time in someone without direction or ambition.
The singer added that she prefers a partner who is already emotionally and financially independent, noting that she no longer has the time or energy to “build a man.”
The singer made the clarification during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, responding to years of public curiosity and persistent media speculation about her personal life.
Waje’s comments highlight the challenges Nigerian celebrities face in managing public perception, especially when creative projects are misinterpreted as personal affairs.
