Wole Soyinka has criticised President Bola Tinubu for sending the Nigerian Air Force to Benin Republic after the failed coup attempt against President Patrice Talon.
Speaking at an event in Lagos, the Nobel Laureate said the situation did not require a military response and suggested the President could have handled it differently.
Soyinka explained that he recently saw Tinubu’s son, Seyi, in Lagos with a large group of heavily armed security officers.
He said the number of operatives around Seyi was so much that it looked strong enough to secure a small country.
According to him, the scene made him question why the President needed to deploy the Air Force.
He added that with the kind of protection he saw, Seyi could have been sent to “quell” the unrest in Benin on his father’s behalf.
Soyinka said the heavy security presence around the President’s son shocked him and made him look around for the National Security Adviser.
