Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the rearrest of a Nigerian televangelist, Timothy Omotoso who was acquitted of multiple rape charges few weeks ago.
It should be recalled that South African police authorities and the Home Affairs Department re-arrested the televangelist recently in East London. According to reports, the 66-year-old pastor of the Jesus Dominion International Church in South Africa was arrested in 2017 on 32 counts, including rape, sexual exploitation, and people trafficking.
However, Omotoso was freed last month, nine years after being imprisoned to stand trial on allegations of raping and sexually abusing numerous young women in his congregation. But recently, the National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola stated that Omotosho’s rearrest was due to immigration issues.
Sequence to his recent arrest, Shehu Sani took to X (formerly twitter) to share his opinion on his matter.
The former lawmaker said: “Whatever is the case of Pastor Timothy Omotosho in South Africa, his fundamental rights should be respected and not stigmatised or criminalised because of his nationality.“
