In Amaekpu, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, the Umuada, daughters of the community, disciplined a man reportedly responsible for repeatedly beating his mother and father.
The offender received 30 strokes of the cane, reflecting the community’s traditional justice practices aimed at correcting misconduct.
The action demonstrates how local groups step in to protect vulnerable family members and uphold moral conduct, particularly where formal law enforcement may be slow or absent.
Speaking on the incident, community leaders said the punishment was both corrective and preventative, intended to restore respect for elders and discourage similar behaviour among others.
Public enforcement of cultural norms, such as administering caning, remains a powerful tool in maintaining discipline and accountability within families.
The Umuada’s intervention underscores the importance of communal responsibility in preserving family values and safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable individuals.
